Modernising a book without erasing its date
Conserver le lien entre patrimoine et usage présent
An old text enters a new layout. The margins breathe, the headings are easier to follow, and a reader can find the beginning of a chapter without effort. These changes may look modest. Yet they raise a serious editorial question: which parts of this new reading experience belong to the source, and which belong to the present edition? A clean page should help answer that question rather than hide it.
Modernisation is not a single operation. Correcting a transcription error, changing spelling, explaining an unfamiliar expression and rewriting a passage each create a different relationship with the earlier text. Calling all of them improvements makes that relationship harder to inspect. I would rather name the intervention in ordinary language and give the reader enough context to understand its scope.
Consider a hypothetical historical cookbook. Its language might assume equipment or habits that a contemporary reader does not recognise. An editorial note can explain the difficulty while leaving the original instruction identifiable. A rewritten instruction serves another purpose. It offers a present interpretation, which should be described as such. Neither choice becomes trustworthy merely because the typography is elegant or the explanation sounds confident.
Dates help separate these layers. The date associated with the source should remain distinguishable from the date of the new edition and the date of a later correction. They answer different questions. A recent file does not make its contents contemporary. An old source does not make every sentence on a new page historical. When those distinctions disappear, the reader has to reconstruct editorial decisions from clues that may no longer be available.
A short note on the text can do useful work here. It can identify the source used, describe the kind of intervention made and state what has been left unchanged. It should also acknowledge uncertainty where the source is incomplete or a reading remains difficult. This is not a demand for a scholarly apparatus around every paragraph. It is a request for proportionate evidence at the point where an editorial choice changes understanding.
The cover belongs to this conversation, but its authority is limited. A visual language suggesting an earlier period may establish an atmosphere. It cannot establish the date of a text, the authenticity of a transcription or the fidelity of an adaptation. The cover of the sauces volume, for example, is an object we can inspect for its visible hierarchy and collection label. Its appearance alone cannot supply a history of the material inside.
Preserving that boundary also helps with future corrections. If a reader identifies a problem, an editor should be able to locate the relevant source and distinguish an inherited phrase from a recent addition. A correction then has a defined target. Without that distinction, an apparently small change can quietly alter the account of what the edition represents. Readability and traceability need to develop together.
Publishing OS remains an internal R&D prototype, not a commercially validated product. The useful question for this work is whether it can help keep such relationships visible while leaving interpretation and editorial responsibility with people. I am not presenting a measured result here. I am describing a standard against which an experiment can be examined.
A successful modern edition allows a reader to enter the work today and still recognise that it came from somewhere. The past does not need to be disguised as the present to remain readable. What deserves renewed attention is the passage between them: the source we chose, the intervention we made and the reason we thought it would help.
